AI Talks: From SEO to AEO — we stopped optimizing to appear and started optimizing to be the answer

For almost 20 years, the digital objective was clear: appear on the first page of Google. We built websites, chose keywords, earned links and climbed the rankings. SEO - Search Engine Optimization - was the language nearly all of us learned to speak.

But the way people look for information has changed. It is increasingly rare for users to work through ten results in search of the best option. Think of the last time you had to choose a supplier, a hotel or a restaurant, get to grips with an unfamiliar subject, or ask for a recommendation: chances are you asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity, and accepted the answer without opening ten tabs. The "first page" has shrunk to a single answer.

This is where a new discipline comes in: AEO - Answer Engine Optimization (some also call it GEO, Generative Engine Optimization). The goal is no longer simply to appear. It is to be the answer the AI chooses to give.

It’s not just the letter that changes. SEO optimizes for keywords and position; AEO optimizes for comprehension and citation. Google returned a list and left the choice to the person. AI returns a decision already made.

In practice, the playing field changes. Instead of competing for a place in the rankings, we work to make sure AI understands precisely who the brand is, what it does, and why it deserves to be cited. That requires clear, semantically organized content, structured data, consistency across languages and channels, and information written to be consumed by machines - not only read by people.

One important clarification: SEO is not dead. Being well indexed remains essential – it is the foundation everything else rests on. But it is no longer enough. Anyone who stops at traditional SEO is optimizing for a page that fewer and fewer people reach.

A brand can be number one on Google and, at the same time, be practically invisible to AI. These are different games, with different rules.

Few brands have grasped this yet. Those who understand the shift early occupy the authority space before the competition realizes the rules have changed. Being the chosen answer isn’t luck, it’s built.
